Numeracy

Monday:

I understand what a fifth means – I can create and identify fifths of a shape and can find fifths of a number

Introducing the Concepts

Count and colour different numbers of fifths, indicating what fractions are coloured and uncoloured each time.

• Review the link between fractions and multiplication/division, e.g. sharing 20 into five equal groups is the same as 20 ÷ 5 which is the same as how many 5s are in 20 (5 × __ = 20).

• 5 × 4 = 20.

one fifth = 4

two fifths = 8

I can compare and order simple fractions – halves, quarters, fifths and tenths

Fraction Walls, Would you rather?

Ask questions involving ‘Would you rather?’ to compare amounts. Would you rather have ¾ or 6/10 of a cake? Children can use fraction walls to answer or to check their answer. You could extend this to comparing answers to questions about fractions of numbers. Would you rather have 1/2 of £3 or 7/10 of £5?
