P6 visit Antrim Round Tower

6th Mar 2023

P6 have been learning all about Viking times. They were so interested to learn about local history in Antrim during this time. We researched and found that this Round Tower would have been used by the monks to keep themselves and any valuables in the monastery safe during Viking raids. The Vikings climbed up to the door, 2m high off the ground, using a ladder and then pulled this into the tower. They were able to take shelter inside the 28m high tower.

We learned that the tower was mainly made from basalt. We could see the cross above the doorway. We also enjoyed hearing the myth of the witch and loved getting to see the ‘witches stone’.

We loved taking our own photographs from our trip and picked our favorites to make a collage. What a great day out to discover some local history!
